Melissa is a Colorado native, wife, and mother of two. She has been fascinated with cycling since 2003. After having her first child, Melissa wanted to get back into shape quickly, so she purchased her first road bike and it has been an addiction ever since. To Melissa, riding her bike means getting a great workout and an exhilarating sense of freedom.
In the beginning, with each bike ride, Melissa began setting personal goals for distance and speed and was thrilled with her accomplishments and results. In 2009, Melissa’s Uncle Rodger convinced her to participate in the annual Ride The Rockies bicycle tour. At this point in her life, the furthest distance Melissa had traveled on her bike was only about 30 miles. The idea of riding back to back days, for over 300 miles in less than a week, seemed unrealistic to her. Thankfully, Rodger was able to convince Melissa to believe in herself, and her unrealistic dream became a wonderful reality. Ride The Rockies 2009 was one of Melissa’s greatest accomplishments. Not only did she tackle high mileage and challenging mountain passes each day, but she also did the entire bike tour alone. Melissa learned that she is much stronger than she ever realized, not just physically, but mentally as well. The fulfilling sense of pride that came with crossing the finish line that year, pushed Melissa to participate in several other Ride The Rockies tours in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
During the 2011 Ride The Rockies tour, Melissa met one of her very best friends, Sharon Madison. In the few days they rode together during that first tour, Sharon taught Melissa the “art” of cycling. It was a crash course in drafting, nutrition, bike maintenance and cycling fashion. Melissa felt completely overwhelmed but hopelessly intrigued. After Ride The Rockies that year, Sharon and Melissa began to ride together more frequently and Sharon began to mold Melissa into the cyclist that she new she could be. It took a lot of convincing, but Sharon finally talked Melissa into joining The Naked Women’s Racing Team. In 2013, Melissa once again pushed herself outside of her comfort zone, and she signed up to race. It is one of the best decisions she has ever made. Cycling has taught Melissa what it means to be a teammate, how to race her bike and most importantly, to face her fears.
Personal Goal: This season, I would like to race in a time trial and do at least one stage race. I would also love to become a cat 3:)
