CU Research Park Criterium: Racing with a Plan

Jamie and her teammates took a 3rd place podium spot. It’s always great when things go according to plan! Our Cat 4’s are starting off this season STRONG!

I showed up to Saturday’s crit with no idea what was in store for me that day.  I’d raced on a club in Texas but never had enough teammates in my field to race with any type of strategy.  Heck, the goal of my entire first season was to simply stay on a wheel and rubber side down.

The first bonus I found in having teammates was not having to warm up alone.  The Amandas and I set up our trainers and laughed and joked as we started firing up the cylinders.  Tami joined us, and we began to talk about our plan for the race.  My legs were feeling pretty good, so I was nominated to be “it”.  My job was to stay as fresh as possible during the race, then tear it up at the finish line.  I tried desperately to hide the fact that this intimidated and scared the daylights out of me.

The .6 mile course loop was fairly flat with sweeping corners.  The pavement had some minor rough spots and one dip in the road that served as a BMX –style ramp, launching us what felt like several feet into the air every lap.  (See photo below, as I am fairly certain this is what we looked like at that section.)

The Cat 4 women must have been training diligently during the off season, as the race itself was fast-paced and aggressive with an attack on almost every lap.  Amanda 2.0 did an amazing job chasing down attacks and controlling the pace on the front of the peloton, while  1.0 kept tabs on me within the pack and went out of her way to make sure I was protected from the wind and had a steady wheel to follow.

The final lap is still somewhat of a blur in my mind.  As the pace of the group accelerated, I managed to latch onto the right wheel and was in the #2 position coming out of the final corner.   My sprint technique and timing definitely have room for improvement, as I was taken at the line by the rider behind me and finished third.

My first experience of racing with a team was more than I could ever have hoped for.  We formed and executed a plan, got Naked on the podium, and had a ton of fun doing it.  I am so stoked for what we can achieve this season!
