DENVER, Colo (September 6, 2011) – Ride for Reading, a Tennessee-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote literacy and healthy living through the distribution of books via bicycle to children from low-income areas, is headed to Las Vegas, NV not only for the annual Interbike Convention but also to spread its mission to local students. Ride for Reading will be delivering books via bicycle to the students of Peterson Elementary School on Thursday, September 15th at 9:15 am.
The 100 participating bicyclists loaded down with books for the students and escorted by the Las Vegas Police Department are made up of local riders and Interbike participants. The ride will be marshaled by the young ladies of Jet Cycling’s Magic 6 Elite team who has recently partnered with Ride for Reading. The Denver-based TriBella Race Team also helped to kick off the delivery by donating over 1000 children’s books.
Upon arrival of the bicyclists to Peterson Elementary School, the students will hear from Mathew Portell, founder of Ride for Reading, about the importance of literacy, reading, cycling, fitness, healthy living, and helmet wearing. The school is also an active participant in the Safe Routes for Schools program by promoting cycling and walking to school.
Mathew Portell founder said, “It has been our goal to spread our mission as far and wide as possible! We are ecstatic to be able to bring our mission to the children of Las Vegas. We hope to leave them with the desire to stay fit and continue reading.”
